Correspondence, advertisements, articles and clippings, and legal, promotional and supplementary materials concerning Salvarsan, a syphilis drug marketed by a German firm and its American affiliate prior to World War I, but taken over by the American-owned Chemical Foundation during the war. After the war, Herman A. Metz, owner of the American firm, filed an unsuccessful lawsuit to obtain the return of the patents from the Chemical Foundation. His company then turned to making other patent medicines including a cure for eczema.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration originated as part of the Dept. of Agriculture. In 1940, it was transferred to the Federal Security Agency, where it remained until 1953, when it became part of the newly created Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare.
